At
just over 250,000 people, Anchorage is,really, still a small town. You can
be out of town in minutes and the city has beautiful parks and a network
of trails which open the door to a lot of activities including hiking, cross-country
skiing, softball, soccer, sledding, ice skating, picnicking or just enjoying
the peace and quiet of the outdoors!
The “midnight sun” offers Anchorage many hours of daylight in the summer. Fishing, boating, mountain biking, softball, soccer, tennis, running and golfing are popular summertime activities. Anchorage provides all the amenities and conveniences of a large city, but leaves behind the normal congestion and hectic pace of cities outside of Alaska. Residents and visitors enjoy the quiet beauty of Anchorage and the splendor of Alaska's great outdoors including glaciers, mountains, wildlife, and the northern lights.

The Municipality of Anchorage has 1,955 square miles including the smaller communities of Eagle River to the north, and Girdwood to the south. There are several shopping malls, many specialty shops, gourmet coffee houses and fine restaurants. Anchorage has an active arts community, and is included in many national tours of major theatrical productions
The
Anchorage Museum of History and Art and sixteen historic sites on the National
Register reflect the city's rich history. The latest movies play on multi-screen
theaters, and Anchorage is home to many retail giants like Kmart and CompUSA,
Penny’s and Nordstroms. More than 130 kilometers of ski trails wind
through town. Kincaid Park, in southwest Anchorage, provides miles of cross-country
ski trails. It was the site of the 1994 National cross-country ski trials
and the 1997 Masters Nationals. Hilltop Ski area, in south Anchorage, provides
additional cross-country ski trails and downhill skiing. The Westin Alyeska
Ski Resort in Girdwood, just 45 minutes from downtown, is a world-class ski
resort.
