If you are planning to put your house on the market this year, now may be the best time to do so. The temperatures are rising, the days are lengthening, and what little snow we had is disappearing. Whether you are hoping for a quick sale now or planning on selling your house this summer, it's a good idea to take advantage of our warmer months to show off your residence to potential buyers. Here are three ways to prepare your home for any potential buyer who walks through the front door...
1. Clean out your closets & cabinets. Buyers are looking for properties that are equipped with adequate storage space. Even if your home is lacking in this area, clean, uncluttered closets and cabinets can give the impression of plenty of space. We recommend putting half of your closet's contents into storage elsewhere (under beds, in the garage, or even in your car during showings!), and neatly arranging and organizing the items that remain.
2. Make your home anyone's home. Once your closets and cabinets are clean and organized, it's time to turn your home into a blank slate. Remove family portraits from your walls and replace them with nondescript art. Take your kid's art off the side of the refrigerator. Put your personal keepsake items into storage. The less personalized the space, the wider audience of buyers it will appeal to.
3. Get Fluffy outta there! Nothing is more personal than a family pet. If you have one, remember that although you love your furry friend, not all potential buyers will. If you know you will be having a showing, take your pet out for the day, along with its bed, food and water bowls, and random chew toys, and keep your home as fur-free and odor-free as possible.
