How long the carpet in your home lasts and how long it keeps looking beautiful depends on the quality of the carpet itself, and the care and maintenance it receives. Good quality carpet that is properly maintained should last 10 to 15 years. Proper carpet maintenance is a combination of three important elements: Regular vacuuming, spot cleaning as needed, and periodic deep cleaning.
The definition of regular vacuuming can be very subjective, depending on how much traffic the carpet receives. A good rule of thumb is to vacuum high-traffic areas two or three times a week and do a wall-to-wall vacuuming at least weekly.
Regular vacuuming is important
because it removes dry soil that is either airborne or tracked in from outdoors. Dry soil can negatively impact the look of your carpet because it makes it look dull, and it can cause abrasion on the carpet fiber in traffic areas. That’s a big part of why high-traffic areas wear more quickly. While nothing can completely prevent wear, rem
oving dry soil can minimize it.
Spot Cleaning As Needed
When something is spilled on the carpet it’s essential that it be cleaned up as soon as possible to reduce the possibility of staining. In the carpet cleaning world, spots and stains are different. A spot is something that can be removed. A stain is permanent. A
spot, if left untreated, can turn into a stain.
The single most important element of cleaning up a spill is to blot the spill with a clean white cloth or paper towels. Never use a scrubbing motion. Scrubb
ing will cause permanent damage to the tips of the carpet fibers, and change the appearance of the carpet. Once you’ve blotted up the excess liquid, consult the specific cleaning instructions provided on the carpet manufacturer’s website. They will tell you what kind of cleaning solution to use depending on what the spot consists of. In some cases, you may be instructed to call a carpet cleaning professional. If that’s the recommendation of the manufacturer, by all means follow it - especially if your carpet is still under warranty.
Periodic Deep Cleaning
This is where the most mistakes are made when it comes to carpet care and maintenance. Most people wait too long between professional cleanings - waiting until the carpet looks dirty. That's a big mistake. The truth is, if you wait until the carpet starts to look bad, you’ve actually waited too long.
Carpet should be deep cleaned at least once per year, preferably by a qualified professional who uses a dry carpet cleaning system. Dry is better for your carpet.
Trying to do it yourself with one of those rental units from the super-market or hardware store will often cause more problems than it solves. But, if you must do it yourself, look for a dry carpet cleaning system rental rather than hot water extraction (commonly referred to a “steam cleaning”), and carefully follow the instructions provided with the product.
