Home Selling Tips: Putting up Christmas Decorations when your Home is on the Market

If your home is on the market, you’ve probably went to a great deal of trouble to stage it just right and ensure the front of it provides curb appeal. Now that the Christmas season is here, you may be wondering whether all that effort will go unnoticed if you put up holiday decorations. The fact is that the right décor can invoke a sense of warmth in your home, while also helping to highlight some of your most important features.
On the outside, use strands of Christmas lights to accent the best features of your home, but be sure not to go overboard. You should probably forego putting Santa and his reindeer on top of your roof, and keep oversized inflatable yard ornaments in storage this year. Even so, a delicate evergreen wreath on your front door would help welcome guests, so long as it’s tasteful in nature.
Choose your Christmas tree carefully so as not to make your room appear too cluttered or hide special features such as your windows. Rather than a six-foot or taller tree, consider a three or four foot tabletop one instead. You should also avoid the temptation to stack lots of presents underneath your tree, as this could make maneuvering your room somewhat difficult. Instead, place them neatly inside a closet or stack them in a storage shed while your home is being shown.
Add a simple arrangement to your table to help lend an air of holiday cheer. A few pinecones in a bowl or some colorful red and green candies in a dish all make nice displays that are not overwhelming. You could even include an elegant tablecloth in an earth-toned pattern to help soften the mood without making your room seem overly bold.
Avoid putting out your Christmas village, trains, bright tinsel, knick-knacks or garland, as these can all be overpowering. By cutting down on your decorating, you’ll be making things much easier for yourself if you do wind up selling in December, because you will already have fewer items to pack up whenever it’s time to move.
