Are you relocating to Anchorage during the winter? If you're one of our neighbors to the south, you may imagine streets of igloos bathed in 24-hour-a-day darkness.
Let us be the first to tell you: Anchorage winters are beautiful, temperate, and boast plenty of daylight. Although the snow falls from mid-October through mid-April, we enjoy a pleasant maritime climate with highs in the lower 20s in our coldest month (December). And unlike Barrow on the northern border of Alaska (which sees 67 days of night during the winter), the shortest span of winter daylight is still over 5 hours. Not many complain when the Northern Lights take over, shooting vibrant shades of reds, blues, and greens across the sky as early as 8:00 p.m. during the winter.
5 Tips to Relocating to Anchorage During the Winter
Regardless, every season brings its own concerns for moving day. If you're scheduled to arrive in mid-October or beyond, when chances of snowfall are greater, it's not a bad idea to start preparing now. Consider a few simple think-ahead tips for a smooth move in winter weather:
1. Heat, Lights, Water
Make sure all utilities are set up and running properly. You'll want to move into a house with heat, lights, and hot water.
2. Snow Removal
If possible, arrive before the moving truck. Clear the driveway and all walkways around the home. Salt or sand the area if necessary. If you are arriving with the truck, keep shovels and salt or sand easily accessible.
3. Protect the Floors
Consider laying plastic or cardboard along the walkways before beginning to unload. Tape edges securely to remove a tripping hazard. A protected floor should take some bite out of the clean-up process later.
4. Check the Weather
Keep your eye on Anchorage's 10-day forecast to know what to expect.
5. Back-Up Plan
Have a back-up plan. Talk with your moving company beforehand to learn their related policies for weather and rescheduling.
