Although spring and early summer may be prime time to sell an Anchorage home because of families trying to get settled in time for the school year, another good time to sell is during the holiday break. Often buyers have the time available to look for a home.
When preparing to sell your home in the fall and winter, take full advantage of the holidays and the positive memories they may evoke. Whether you hire a professional or do it yourself, staging a home for the holiday season can be fun. According to an article by Realtor.com on home staging tips for the holiday, most real estate experts advise putting up non-religious decorations for open houses.
Appealing to the sense of smell
Although 8 percent of Realtors surveyed by Realtor.com said they think sellers should not put out holiday or seasonal decorations, it’s always a good idea to appeal to the buyers’ sense of smell. During the fall season, use apple and cinnamon scents. During the winter, opt for pine scents. Whether you burn candles, incense or bake pumpkin and apple pies, you’ll remind people of happy memories. Fifty-nine percent of Realtors surveyed thought home sellers should use winter-scented fragrances.
Lighting the fireplace
In Anchorage, Alaska, many home owners have one or more fireplaces. According to the survey, 80 percent of Realtors surveyed recommended homeowners light the fireplace when staging a home. Others suggested home sellers update their outdoor lighting. Another way to bring a sense of coziness to your home is to neatly arrange wool blankets and pillows as well as decorative accent rugs.
Creating the atmosphere
In addition to spraying a fresh scent, it’s also advisable to play seasonal music. Fifty-percent of Realtors surveyed advised their clients to play music, while 54 percent thought they should set their tables with holiday plates, decorations and centerpieces. Other ideas including hanging a holiday wreath on the door or stringing snowflake lights through the trees in the front yard for added curb appeal.
